Finding & Collecting Coupons

Keep your eyes open while at the store for extra coupons. Coupons that you find at one store may be good for a product on sale at another!

Coupon Sources

There are so many different coupon sources, giving you so many different ways to save. Following is a list outlining the most popular coupon types and where to find them.

  • Blinkie – You may come across small blinking machines within store aisles that offer coupons for specific products, generally those closest to the machine itself.
  • Booklet or Pamphlet – Always a great resource, booklets offer coupons, recipes and other helpful information and are generally found on display at the grocery store.
  • Cash Register Tapes (CRT) - Most often used by CVS and Target, these coupons are found at the bottom of your receipt.
  • Catalina – These are store-specific, manufacturer coupons that print along with your grocery shopping receipt.
  • Clipless - Coupons that are loaded onto customer loyalty cards and are not found in printed form. Clipless coupons cannot be used more than once, are redeemed at face value only and can be combined with other manufacturer coupons.
  • Found Inside Magazine - You will often find coupons within magazines. However, the only magazine we keep track of is Walmart’s All You.
  • Found Inside Packages – These coupons are bonus deals found inside the packaging of specific products, and cannot be accessed until the product has been opened.
  • Hang/Winetag – Coupons that hang around bottles, including alcoholic beverages and soda bottles.
  • Internet or Internet Printable - These are manufacturer coupons that you print from your home computer. Generally, each Internet coupon can be printed a maximum of two times.
  • Manufacturer – These coupons are printed on paper and generally delivered with the Sunday newspaper.
  • Peelie – These are coupons that are attached to specific products, and are easily peeled off.
  • Store – These coupons are valid only at the specific store offering the discount. They can, however, also be used in combination with a manufacturer coupon for even greater savings.
  • Snail Mail – Manufacturer coupons delivered directly to your mailbox.
  • Tearpad – Similar to Blinkies, these coupons are also located in stores near the discounted products. Simply take one and use it at the register.

Newspaper Inserts

Even with all the options available, newspapers are still your best source for coupons. That’s because coupon manufacturers pay newspapers to include their inserts, so those with the highest circulation have the most – and best – coupons. Find which newspaper in your area has the highest circulation and get a subscription to that paper. Coupon inserts are typically found in the middle of the newspaper with the advertisements.

To get the most savings, you’ll want to have multiple copies of each coupon, so plan to buy several newspapers each week or ask your neighbors, families and co-workers for their inserts. Some members have called their local newspaper and have requested multiple subscriptions of the Sunday publication. And as most newspapers today are looking for ways to increase circulation, you may be pleasantly surprised by their response.

Another great way to get additional coupons is to participate in the Message Board in our “Coupon Trading” section. There you can exchange coupons that you won’t use for coupons that you will use.

Lastly, for good coupon karma, be sure to reward those who do offer you extra coupons. Put together a basket of freebies that came from their generous donation of coupons. They’ll love it—and you can show off just how great the Coupon Sense system really is.

What inserts should I look for?

There are three main coupon inserts that come with the Sunday newspaper:

  • RedPlum – This set of materials is received with your newspaper or directly in your mailbox and includes relevant offers, savings and deals that can help you save money on products you need.
  • SmartSource – SmartSource inserts coupons in over 1,160 weekend newspapers, bringing you great deals straight from the manufacturers.
  • P&GbrandSAVER - This booklet is a one-stop source for samples and coupons offering savings on Proctor & Gamble’s family of products.

Internet Coupons

Internet Coupons are manufacturer coupons available online for you to print on your home computer. With all the different coupon sites available, you will most likely find coupons for the products you buy every week.

Generally, printable coupons are limited to two prints per computer and have what’s called rolling expiration dates, meaning they expire two weeks after the date printed. Most internet coupon sites also have a limit for these coupons; once the maximum number of coupons has been met, the coupon will be deleted from the site. Some coupons are more popular than others and therefore don’t last long, so if you see a coupon for something you like, print it while it’s still available! We update our database with any new printable coupons several times each week.
